WOODLAND PARK, N.J.- Both undocumented immigrants and veterans were detained during a raid on Thursday shortly after Donald Trump signed executive orders targeting illegal operations, said Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents failed to show a warrant as they detained people. The military documents of a US military veteran(who was one among other detainees)were challenged during the raid and it was a very disrespectful move. As per Baraka, this was a violation of the Fourth Amendment, which protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures. He emphasized that Mewark will not passively bear unlawful acts against people.
Trump during his campaign threatened to deport 11 moon undocumented immigrants if he got back yo White House. In New Jersey alone, over 470,000 residents are undocumented.
According to White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, on Thursday 538 individuals including members of a Venezuelan prison gang and individuals convicted of sex crimes were arrested and labelled as illegal immigrant criminals.
During field operations,US citizens might be asked for identification to verify identities as occurred during a targeted raid at a Newark workplace, said ICE spokesperson. Not only Baraka spoke against the raid but also Rep. LaMonica McIver said her office has “reached out to the Department of Homeland Security to get answers on exactly what happened, and how it was allowed that ICE came in − without a warrant and without justification − to detain not only immigrants but citizens and even a veteran of our nation’s military.” She said “We will always fight for the dignity and rights of everyone in our district and across the country.”
