Justin Trudeau has accused U.S. President Donald Trump of targeting Canada’s economy with tariffs to push for annexation. The Canadian Prime Minister made these remarks during a heated press conference about escalating trade tensions between both nations.
On Tuesday, Justin Trudeau claimed that Trump’s tariff war aimed to destabilize Canada’s economy. Hours after Trump imposed 10% tariffs on Canadian energy and 25% on other goods, Canada responded with 25% tariffs on C$30 billion of U.S. imports, including cosmetics, appliances, and fruit. If necessary, Canada vowed to target another C$125 billion in 21 days.
Trudeau dismissed Trump’s fentanyl-related justification for the tariffs, calling it false and unjustified. “He wants to see Canada’s economy collapse because it would make annexation easier,” Justin Trudeau asserted. “Let us not fool ourselves about his intentions. We will never be the 51st state.”
Trudeau Blasts U.S. Priorities Amid Trade War
Trudeau addressed Trump directly, saying, “Donald, I rarely agree with the Wall Street Journal, but they’re right—this is a very dumb move.” He criticized Trump’s approach of alienating allies while cooperating with Russia.
“The U.S. just launched a trade war against Canada, their closest ally and partner. Meanwhile, they discuss working with Vladimir Putin, a dictator known for deception and violence. Make that make sense,” Trudeau said.
He also challenged Americans on whether they truly support “abandoning loyal allies in favor of Russia.” He emphasized that Russia has never had American interests at heart and continues to harm the global economy.
Trump Escalates Feud with Trudeau Insult
Following Canada’s retaliatory tariffs, Trump threatened to increase U.S. tariffs further.
“Please explain to Governor Trudeau of Canada that when he imposes tariffs on the U.S., our reciprocal tariffs will rise accordingly!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Justin Trudeau remains firm that Canada will not back down, insisting that the country will protect its economy and sovereignty despite Trump’s aggressive policies.
