A day after a major fire broke out at the Martinez Refinery, officials have confirmed that the blaze is under control. Investigations into the cause are ongoing, but local community events are proceeding as scheduled.
The fire at 3495 Pacheco Blvd. began around 2 p.m. on Saturday, caused by an explosion due to a hydrocarbon leak in the refinery’s Light Oil Processing area. Firefighters were quickly on the scene to extinguish the flames.
By 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, multiple complaints were received by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District about strong chemical and industrial odors, flaring, and burning at the refinery. Incident Response staff observed plumes of smoke that exceeded air quality standards, prompting an investigation by the Air District.
A Level 3 alert was issued by Contra Costa Health Services at 5 p.m., advising residents near the refinery to shelter in place. However, the order was lifted by 9:15 p.m., though a public health advisory for Martinez, Pacheco, and Clyde remains in effect.
Martinez Refining Company personnel shut down the sources of the fire by 9:57 p.m., and firefighters fully contained the flames by 12:15 a.m. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, although six people were checked by medical staff.
The refinery expressed its commitment to safety, stating: “We are deeply sorry for the disruption and concern caused to the community.” They vowed to thoroughly investigate the incident and take corrective actions.
While residual smoke may still be visible and periodic flares are expected, Contra Costa Health advises those with respiratory sensitivities to stay indoors.
Despite the event, Downtown Martinez & Co. announced that its farmers market and Lunar New Year celebration will go ahead as planned, with conditions deemed safe for most attendees. Organizers remain in close contact with officials and will adjust plans if necessary.
