Roy Ayers, Jazz-Funk Icon and ‘Coffy’ Composer, Dies at 84

Roy Ayers, the legendary jazz-funk vibraphonist, passed away at 84 after a long illness. Known for his iconic hit “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” he influenced generations of artists.

In a statement to Variety, Roy Ayers’ family confirmed his passing on March 4, 2025, in New York City. They described him as a “highly influential composer, vibraphonist, and music producer” whose work shaped jazz, funk, and neo-soul.

Roy Ayers built a remarkable career blending jazz and funk, inspiring the neo-soul movement. As a solo artist, he released dozens of albums, dating back to 1963. His group, Roy Ayers Ubiquity, produced timeless music, including the widely sampled “Everybody Loves the Sunshine.” Artists like Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, Tyler, the Creator, and Common have used his music in their work. He also collaborated with icons like Erykah Badu, Rick James, and Fela Kuti.

Born in Los Angeles in 1940, Roy Ayers grew up in a musical home. At five, he saw Lionel Hampton’s Big Band perform, inspiring him to pursue the vibraphone. He later took piano lessons and sang in a church choir. At 17, he received his first vibraphone as a gift and later studied advanced music theory at Los Angeles City College.

Roy Ayers made his recording debut in the early 1960s with saxophonist Curtis Amy. He signed with United Artists and released his first album, West Coast Vibes, in 1963. Teaming with jazz flutist Herbie Mann, he recorded three albums before joining Polydor. In 1973, he composed the soundtrack for Coffy, the Pam Grier-led blaxploitation film. His biggest success came in 1976 when Everybody Loves the Sunshine became a defining track in jazz-funk history.

Over the decades, Roy Ayers launched two record labels, Uno Melodic and Gold Mink Records. His final solo album, Mahogany Vibe (2004), featured Erykah Badu and Betty Wright. In 2015, he appeared on Tyler, the Creator’s Find Your Wings.

Roy Ayers is survived by his wife, Argerie, and children, Mtume and Ayana Ayers.
