A family spokesperson confirmed that David Johansen died at home on Friday. His passing comes just over a week after he shared a heartfelt message thanking fans for their support.
In a video posted in late February, David Johansen spoke from his bed, expressing gratitude for the kindness he received. “I’ve never asked for help before, but Mara has shown me the beauty of seeking support when needed,” he said.
His daughter, Leah Hennessey, had recently revealed the severity of his condition. She created a fundraising campaign to assist with medical expenses, shedding light on his private health struggles.
“David has been undergoing intensive treatment for stage 4 cancer for nearly a decade,” Hennessey wrote. “Five years ago, doctors discovered his cancer had spread, and he had developed a brain tumor. Complications have persisted ever since.”
Despite his health issues, David Johansen remained resilient. However, in late 2023, he suffered another setback. “The day after Thanksgiving, my father fell down the stairs and broke his back in two places,” Hennessey shared.
Following surgery, he was bedridden, and his condition worsened significantly. His wife provided round-the-clock care during his final months.
