The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee approved Kash Patel FBI nomination for director in a 12-10 vote. The Republican-controlled panel’s decision moves Patel closer to confirmation despite strong Democratic opposition.
Democrats voiced concerns over Patel’s qualifications and impartiality. “We are inviting a political disaster if we put Kash Patel into this job,” said Senator Dick Durbin. Patel, a loyal supporter of former President Donald Trump, has advocated for closing the FBI’s Washington headquarters. He has also promoted unverified claims about FBI involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
During his confirmation hearing, Patel vowed not to seek political retaliation against FBI personnel. However, shortly after the hearing, senior Trump-backed Justice Department officials dismissed eight senior FBI employees. They also ordered the FBI to submit a list of all personnel involved in January 6 investigations, raising concerns of further dismissals.
In response, FBI employees filed lawsuits to block the Justice Department from releasing their names. On Friday, the department agreed not to disclose their identities without at least 48 hours’ notice. This development intensified scrutiny of Patel’s potential role in an FBI purge.
Durbin requested an internal investigation after whistleblowers alleged Patel was orchestrating the dismissals. Patel has consistently criticized probes into Trump, calling them efforts by a “deep state” to undermine the former president.
Previously, Patel worked as an aide to then-House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes. He played a key role in congressional investigations of the FBI’s handling of Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia. His experience also includes counterterrorism work at the Justice Department, roles in the National Security Council, and serving as chief of staff to the defense secretary.
After leaving government, Patel engaged in business with foreign entities, including Qatar’s embassy and The Czechoslovak Group, a Czech arms dealer. His financial disclosures, released post-hearing, also revealed unvested restricted stock in Shein, a Chinese clothing company. Patel has not indicated plans to divest.
Public Citizen filed a complaint with the Justice Department regarding Patel’s work with Qatar. The group questioned whether Patel violated foreign agent registration laws. “Kash Patel’s undisclosed ties to Qatar raise concerns about his ethical standing and U.S. national security interests,” said ethics expert Craig Holman.
The full Senate will now decide Patel’s fate in the upcoming Kash Patel FBI nomination vote.
