Virginia McCaskey Passes at 102

Virginia McCaskey, longtime owner of the Chicago Bears and daughter of NFL founder George Halas, has passed away at 102. She inherited the team after her father’s passing in 1983 and remained a guiding force for over four decades.

The McCaskey family announced her passing on Thursday, emphasizing her faith, dedication, and commitment to the team. “While we are deeply saddened, we find comfort knowing Virginia McCaskey lived a full, faith-filled life,” the family stated. “She led the Bears with integrity and always prioritized what was best for players, coaches, and fans.”

Virginia McCaskey upheld her father’s legacy, ensuring the Bears remained in family hands. She entrusted operational control to her eldest son, Michael McCaskey, who later passed the leadership role to George McCaskey in 2011. Under her ownership, the team secured a Super Bowl victory in 1986 and reached another championship in 2007.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell praised Virginia McCaskey’s leadership, calling her a symbol of class and dedication. “Faith, family, and football were her guiding principles,” Goodell stated. “She preserved the legacy her father built with unwavering commitment.”

Originally, Virginia McCaskey had not expected to run the Bears. Her brother, George “Mugs” Halas Jr., was being prepared to take over but passed away unexpectedly in 1979. She stepped into the role after her father’s death and upheld his vision with grace.

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan described Virginia McCaskey as a true legend whose impact on the game will never fade. “Her leadership and focus on family defined the Bears organization,” Khan said. “Her legacy will last forever.”
