House Democrats mourn Sylvester Turner, remembering his fight for Medicaid and dedication to his constituents until the very end.

Sylvester Turner Dies at 70 After Medical Emergency

Sylvester Turner, a Texas Democrat and former Houston mayor, passed away at 70 after a medical emergency. He attended President Donald Trump’s congressional address just hours before his death.

First-term Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, suffered a sudden health crisis Tuesday night and passed away, according to House Democratic sources. The congressman, who had taken office in January, previously battled bone cancer.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., confirmed Sylvester Turner’s death, calling him a dedicated leader who tirelessly served Houston. He described Turner as a “fighter until the end.”

During a private Democratic meeting, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., informed colleagues of Turner’s passing. Another lawmaker reported seeing Turner in distress in the Capitol tunnel, prompting Capitol Police to assist.

Several Democrats interacted with Sylvester Turner before Trump’s address. Photographs showed him seated in the chamber. At 8:30 p.m. ET, Turner shared a social media video with guest Angela Hernandez, who advocates for Medicaid.

“Angela is here to emphasize Medicaid’s importance,” Turner stated. “Let’s ensure we protect Medicaid.” Jeffries referenced this message, highlighting Turner’s unwavering commitment to his constituents.

Elected in November, Sylvester Turner served as Houston’s mayor from 2016 to 2024. A Harvard Law graduate, he practiced law before becoming a state legislator for over 25 years. After Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s passing, Turner won her seat in a special election and took office on January 3.

Turner’s death shifts the House majority to 218-214 for Republicans. With slim margins, every vote becomes crucial. Texas law requires Gov. Greg Abbott to call a special election, but this process may take months.

Tributes poured in from colleagues. Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., praised Sylvester Turner’s lasting impact. Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Texas, honored him as a devoted leader. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., acknowledged Turner’s faithful service and sent condolences to his family and constituents.

Sylvester Turner’s passing marks the loss of a dedicated public servant who devoted his life to Houston and Texas.
