Deebo Samuel Leaves 49ers: The End?

The Commanders land Deebo Samuel in a major trade, adding firepower to their offense. Can he be the missing piece?

Deebo Samuel Leaves 49ers: The End?

Deebo Samuel has been traded by the San Francisco 49ers to the Washington Commanders for a fifth-round pick, sources confirm.

Like all trades at this time, Deebo Samuel’s deal will be finalized when the new league year starts on March 12. Washington will take on his entire $17.55 million salary for 2025.

San Francisco had discussions about including defensive tackle Jonathan Allen in the trade, but ultimately, he was not part of the deal. The move ends Deebo Samuel’s six-year tenure with the 49ers, marked by both explosive plays and off-field frustrations.

Samuel, originally drafted in 2019, quickly became a key player in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. His versatility made him a major threat, recording 4,792 receiving yards and 1,143 rushing yards over six seasons. His standout 2021 season saw him accumulate 1,770 scrimmage yards and 14 touchdowns, leading San Francisco to the NFC Championship Game.

After that All-Pro year, Samuel requested a trade due to contract disputes. While the 49ers held onto him then, his production dipped over the past three seasons, averaging 731 receiving yards and four touchdowns per year. Injuries and limited usage contributed to his struggles, culminating in his renewed trade request this offseason.

Now with Washington, Samuel reunites with Commanders general manager Adam Peters, who played a role in drafting him in San Francisco. He also joins a coaching staff familiar with his skill set, including run game coordinator Anthony Lynn.

The Commanders needed a strong complement to Pro Bowl receiver Terry McLaurin, as several key receivers from 2024 are pending free agency. Washington ranked 21st in yards after catch last season, an area where Samuel excels, averaging 9.0 yards per catch in his career.

His arrival should provide a major boost for quarterback Jayden Daniels, the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year. In 2024, Samuel posted a career-low 806 scrimmage yards, but Washington hopes he can return to his All-Pro form.

With Samuel’s departure, San Francisco now faces uncertainty in its wide receiver corps, making this trade a pivotal moment for both franchises
