Joy Reid ‘s show, The ReidOut, is being canceled as MSNBC undergoes a major programming reshuffle. The decision comes under the leadership of Rebecca Kutler, the network’s new president.
According to sources who spoke to the New York Times, MSNBC is replacing Joy Reid’s 7 p.m. slot with a new program co-hosted by Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Michael Steele. Currently, the trio hosts The Weekend Show. Reid’s final episode is expected to air sometime this upcoming week.
Sanders-Townsend, a Democratic strategist, previously worked as a senior advisor for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Menendez is a well-known television commentator. Steele served as Maryland’s lieutenant governor and was Republican National Committee chair from 2009 to 2011.
The cancellation of Joy Reid’s show follows MSNBC’s leadership change. Rashida Jones, who served as president for nearly four years, stepped down last month. Rebecca Kutler, previously MSNBC’s senior vice president for content strategy, has since taken over.
Following Jones’s exit, NBCUniversal Media Group chairman Mark Lazarus addressed employees, stating, “We have a lot to do.” The network has seen multiple shifts, including Chuck Todd’s January departure from NBC News. Todd, a former Meet The Press host, had been vocal against the hiring of former RNC chair Ronna McDaniel in March 2024.
NBC later decided to part ways with McDaniel, who had led the Republican National Committee during Donald Trump’s first term. NBCUniversal News Group chair Cesar Conde acknowledged concerns raised by staff across the network.
Joy Reid publicly addressed the controversy surrounding McDaniel’s hiring. Speaking with fellow MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, she stated, “I know I felt very strongly about it, I know you felt very strongly about it… When somebody does the right thing, I feel like it should be acknowledged as publicly as we acknowledged our outrage.”
She also expressed gratitude to Conde for reversing the decision, adding, “I think it was the right decision.” Joy Reid’s departure marks a significant change for MSNBC as the network reshapes its primetime lineup under new leadership.
