A powerful snowstorm swept through the Northeast on Thursday, bringing heavy snow, ice, and rain. This is the first of several storms expected to impact the region in the coming days. The storm caused dangerous road conditions, affecting commuters and leading many to ask, “Is there school today?”
The winter storm turned roads icy across multiple states, from Ohio and Pennsylvania to New York and Massachusetts. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued in some areas, worsening travel hazards. The National Weather Service reported snowfall and sleet accumulations of up to four inches in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.
Several school districts in Ohio canceled classes or delayed start times due to icy Iowa road conditions. Freezing rain created slippery sidewalks, parking lots, and streets, making travel hazardous. Many districts continue monitoring snow weather school closings as conditions evolve.
In Metro Detroit, residents faced a challenging morning commute as snow, sleet, and freezing rain blanketed the area. While precipitation is tapering off, freezing drizzle could linger, worsening road conditions. Chicago roads also turned treacherous, with ice-related crashes reported late Wednesday into Thursday. Illinois State Police responded to multiple accidents, including spinouts on the Edens Expressway.
Icy Iowa road conditions also caused a major shutdown on westbound I-88 near DeKalb after multiple crashes. The closure began at 9:22 p.m., though eastbound lanes remained open.
As winter storms continue, school closures remain a concern. Many parents and students are asking, “Is there school today?” Staying updated on snow weather school closings and Iowa road conditions is crucial as conditions change rapidly.
