President Donald Trump dismissed Rohit Chopra, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. This move is part of Trump’s efforts to remove Biden administration holdovers.
Chopra was among the most influential Democratic regulators still in office.
He had remained in his role since Trump took office on January 20. During Trump’s first term, he appointed Chopra as a Democratic FTC commissioner. The White House informed Chopra of his termination through an official email. A person familiar with the situation confirmed this under anonymity.
Chopra has strong ties to Senator Elizabeth Warren, a frequent Trump critic. Warren praised Chopra’s leadership in holding Wall Street accountable for misconduct. She credited him with preventing the exclusion of consumers from banking services.
Warren said Chopra protected those affected by overdraft fees and religious discrimination. She also highlighted his efforts to safeguard conservatives from financial exclusion. By law, Chopra was entitled to a five-year term as CFPB director.
