Rafael Devers made it clear that he has no plans to leave his position at third base. The Boston Red Sox slugger reaffirmed his stance just days after the team signed free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman.
“Third base is my position,” Rafael Devers stated on Monday, making his first comments of Spring Training. The last remaining player from Boston’s 2018 World Series-winning team, Devers spoke with confidence about his role.

Red Sox management, including Alex Cora and Craig Breslow, recently discussed the possibility of Devers shifting to another position. However, Rafael Devers stood firm, emphasizing his desire to remain at third base.
Cora Stresses Team Over Individual Choices
While Devers is vocal about his stance, manager Alex Cora has maintained that the situation remains fluid. Decisions will be made based on what benefits the Red Sox most.
“Decisions about roster construction will be made in the best interest of the team,” Cora said. “Devers has pride in his position, but we have to evaluate every possibility.”
If Rafael Devers stays at third, Bregman may shift to second base, a move Cora believes he can handle well.
Roster Moves Could Shake Up Infield
The addition of Bregman isn’t the only factor impacting infield positions. Kristian Campbell, MLB Pipeline’s No. 7 prospect, is a strong candidate to make the roster. If Campbell secures a spot, second base remains the most likely opening.
For now, Rafael Devers is preparing for the season as Boston’s third baseman. However, the Red Sox have made it clear that flexibility and team success will dictate final decisions.
