Walmart, the largest private employer in the U.S., is cutting jobs and closing offices as part of a corporate restructuring. The layoffs Walmart announced include shutting down its Charlotte, North Carolina office, eliminating hundreds of roles. Employees in Hoboken, New Jersey, and smaller offices must relocate to Bentonville, Arkansas, or Sunnyvale, California.
According to an internal memo from Chief People Officer Donna Morris, the company aims to consolidate key operations for efficiency. “We are streamlining processes and eliminating some roles,” Morris stated. However, Walmart did not disclose the exact number of employees affected. Those asked to relocate have a month to decide.
This move is part of a broader strategy that began in 2024, when Walmart started requiring remote workers to return to physical offices. Offices in Dallas, Atlanta, and Toronto were already affected, with employees directed to Bentonville, Hoboken, or California.
Last year, layoffs Walmart implemented resulted in hundreds of corporate job cuts. The retailer maintains that in-person collaboration fosters innovation and strengthens company culture. As remote work policies fade, Walmart is expanding its physical presence. The newly built 350-acre Bentonville campus now features 12 office buildings, parking decks, and amenity spaces.
Walmart also plans to open offices in Sunnyvale and Bellevue while expanding locations in Hoboken and New York City. These changes reflect a growing trend among major corporations, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta, which have all implemented workforce reductions.
With corporate layoffs Walmart accelerating, employees face tough relocation choices or job losses. The company asserts these measures will enhance efficiency, but many workers remain uncertain about their future.
