On Tuesday morning, Delta Air Lines confirmed that 21 injured passengers were taken to hospitals, up from the initial 18 reported. Nineteen have since been released. Paramedics stated that three individuals, including a child, suffered critical but non-life-threatening injuries.

Delta Connection Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, crashed at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) around 2:15 p.m. ET on Monday. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that all 80 passengers aboard the CRJ-900 jet were safely evacuated. Photos from the scene show the aircraft’s tail sheared off, with the jet resting upside down in the snow. Prior to the Delta plane crash, strong winds and heavy snowfall had already caused flight delays and cancellations at the airport. The aircraft had departed from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport.

Passenger Pete Carlson, an American healthcare worker visiting Toronto for a paramedic conference, described the chaotic moments. “One moment you’re preparing to land, and the next, you’re upside down,” he recalled. He expressed amazement at surviving and said stepping out of the wreckage felt like “walking onto the tundra.”

After the crash, emergency teams quickly moved the injured to a safe location for triage. Air traffic control audio revealed officials describing the plane as “upside down and burning.”

Two critically injured patients were airlifted to trauma centers, while a four-year-old was taken to Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. The cause of the Delta plane crash remains under investigation, with Canada’s Transportation Safety Board leading the inquiry.

Delta’s emergency response team has deployed to assist affected passengers and crew. Delta CEO Ed Bastian reassured that their priority is supporting those involved and their families.

Officials and lawmakers have expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for thorough investigations into recent aviation accidents.

It is notable that this is the third incident of airplane tragedy after Reagan Airport Mid air collision and Philadelphia plane crash.
