The ICC Women’s U19 World Cup Super Six stage in Malaysia began with high drama, as New Zealand pulled off an incredible comeback to stun the USA. With just 12 teams remaining in the competition and only four advancing to the semifinals, every match carries immense importance.
In Bangi, New Zealand overcame the odds, successfully defending a modest total of 97 to claim a stunning victory. Their slow bowlers, led by leg-spinner Rishika Jaswal, orchestrated a dramatic collapse in the USA batting order, securing an unlikely win. Despite being in a commanding position for most of the chase, the USA was bowled out for 79, falling 18 runs short of their target.
The USA initially dominated with a brilliant performance in the field, setting themselves up for what seemed like an easy win. New Zealand’s openers started well, taking the score into the 30s without loss. However, a sudden collapse saw the team lose five wickets for just 12 runs. The USA’s Lekha Shetty and Ritu Singh were instrumental in dismantling New Zealand’s lineup. Shetty’s in-swinging yorker and Singh’s sharp-turning off-break removed key batters, with Singh finishing with remarkable figures of 5 for 15 in four overs to earn Player of the Match honors.
Despite the setbacks, New Zealand managed to post a total thanks to Hannah Francis’ crucial 25 off 33 balls and Jaswal’s gritty 17 off 27. Their efforts ensured the team had a fighting chance.
USA opener Disha Dhingra’s quick 30 off 24 balls appeared to put her team on track for victory. However, Jaswal and Kate Irwin turned the tide, bowling with exceptional economy and taking two wickets each to derail the chase.
Now sitting at fourth and fifth in Super Six Group 2, both New Zealand and the USA face mounting pressure to win their remaining matches to keep their semifinal hopes alive.
