Top Democrats strongly oppose Trump tariffs, claiming they will harm working families and small businesses nationwide. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the move, warning it would “hit Americans in their wallets.” He urged Trump to lower prices instead of driving them higher with unnecessary tariffs.
Schumer also stated that Trump should target unfair competitors like China rather than punishing America’s allies. The Trump tariffs impose a 25% tax on imports from Canada and Mexico, excluding Canadian energy, which faces 10%. China will also face 10% tariffs starting Tuesday.
Canada, Mexico, and China are planning countermeasures against the Trump tariffs. China intends to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization. Meanwhile, Democratic leaders fear the tariffs will hurt American workers, increasing costs for families.
Ken Martin, newly appointed Democratic National Committee chair, condemned Trump tariffs for benefiting corporations while burdening ordinary Americans. He accused Trump of using workers as “pawns in his petty political games.”
Martin emphasized that Trump tariffs contradict his promises to help American families. He warned citizens should be outraged over policies that raise living costs while favoring big businesses.
