President Donald Trump has directed the construction of a detention camp for 30,000 migrants at Guantánamo Bay. This new facility, located at the U.S. naval base in Cuba, will detain immigrants facing deportation proceedings.
Trump announced the plan while signing the Laken Riley Act, which expands detention for immigrants charged with crimes. He emphasized that the site will house “dangerous criminal illegal aliens” and will be “extremely difficult to escape.” Trump stated that some detainees are too dangerous to release and must be held outside U.S. borders.
By establishing this camp, he claimed detention capacity would instantly double, strengthening immigration enforcement efforts.
Currently, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) holds around 40,000 detainees across multiple facilities nationwide. The largest existing ICE detention centers accommodate approximately 2,000 individuals, far fewer than the Guantánamo site.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth supported the decision, describing the naval base as an ideal location.
During a Fox News interview, Hegseth explained that the base has long assisted with migrant processing. He assured that deportees would not be held alongside terrorism suspects, addressing public concerns about detainment conditions.
The facility would serve as a transit center while officials process paperwork and arrange deportations. If detainees’ home countries refuse them, the U.S. may negotiate relocation with third nations. Hegseth also noted a golf course could be repurposed to expand detention capacity by 6,000 beds.
Details regarding housing conditions, costs, and transportation logistics remain unclear as officials finalize plans. Southern Command, overseeing U.S. military operations in Cuba, is currently working through operational requirements.
Trump’s administration has encouraged voluntary self-deportation, and this move aims to intensify pressure on undocumented immigrants. Under his leadership, ICE arrests have surged, tripling daily detentions compared to the previous administration.
This facility represents one of the most aggressive deportation measures in U.S. history.
